Building Strength and Solidarity at Spirit AeroSystems Kinston
On a bright morning at the Spirit AeroSystems plant in Kinston, NC, members of Local 350 gathered with purpose and pride. The energy was unmistakable as union brothers and sisters stood side by side, united in their commitment to each other and the future of their workplace.
Shop stewards, those essential advocates on the shop floor-were out in force, ready to carry the union’s message back to every corner of the plant. Their mission was clear: grow the union by 100 new members, building on last month’s impressive gain of 58. Our stewards are scheduled to be trained in the coming months and empowered with ongoing education and leadership development.
Business Representative Woods, has been working closely with both the leadership team and the stewards, emphasized the power of internal organizing. “We’re starting right at new employee orientation, and that’s given us great success from day one,” Woods shared. By welcoming new hires and sharing the union’s story early, Lodge 350 has created a culture where solidarity starts with the first handshake.
This commitment to growth and unity is part of a proud tradition at Local Lodge 350. Since their landmark organizing victory at Spirit AeroSystems, the members have worked tirelessly to secure strong contracts and ensure that every worker’s voice is heard. Training sessions, collaborative partnerships with management, and a focus on democratic leadership have empowered the lodge to become a force for positive change in the plant and the broader community.
As the meeting wrapped up, the message was clear: every member counts, and every new member makes the union stronger. With determination and solidarity, Local Lodge 350 is not just meeting its goals-it’s building a legacy for the future of aerospace workers in Kinston and beyond.
Zone 110 has members who work primarily in the borders of North Carolina but have contracts with employers in the state of South Carolina as well. Zones 74 and 10 are located within the borders of Virginia primarily.
The current Business Representative for Zone 110 pictured above, is Wilbert Woods. Wilbert, prior to his election in 2021 was the President of IAM Local Lodge 2297. He migrated to North Carolina in the 90’s. We will provide more about his federal service career later.
Zone 110 BR Woods speaks about the successful negotiations at FlightSafety Defense Corporation. During the latter days of August 2024, Zone 110 Business Representative Wilbert Woods had the honor of leading negotiations alongside committee members Sean Rix and Marzetta Barcus, both of whom did an outstanding job representing our members from Local Lodge 1859, District Lodge 2020, Zone 110 at FlightSafety Defense Corporation, Seymour Johnson AFB, Goldsboro, NC.
The aforementioned dedicated lodge members play a crucial role in supporting the KC-46 Pegasus Aircraft Platform, which serves the U.S. Air Force by ensuring seamless aerial refueling and strategic transport operations. The KC-46, a vital asset for the Air Force, not only refuels other aircraft in flight but also transports cargo, passengers, and patients, carrying up to 65,000 pounds of equipment and supplies. The negotiation efforts resulted in significant gains for our members, including:
- Major wage increases
- Improved shift premiums
- A substantial enhancement of their Health & Welfare benefits
- Access to Machinists Custom Choice Worksite Benefits
- 401(k) matching contributions for their retirement plan
These improvements were solidified in a newly ratified 3-year agreement, which ensures that our bargaining unit members continue to receive the support and benefits they deserve while maintaining the highest standards in their work supporting the KC-46 aircraft.
A special thanks to the committeepersons as well as the membership for their dedication and hard work in securing this important agreement.
